Get a Free Library Card in Vancouver: Benefits
How to get a free Vancouver Public Library card and all the benefits. Free movies, courses, museum passes, and more for newcomers.

A Vancouver Public Library card is hands-down the best free thing you can get as a newcomer. Most people think "library = books," but VPL gives you free access to movies, music, online courses, museum passes, and even tools. Here's everything you get with a card.
How to Get Your Card
- Walk into any VPL branch (21 locations across Vancouver)
- Bring one piece of ID with your name and address (passport + a piece of mail works)
- Fill out a form — takes 5 minutes
- Get your card immediately — it's free
No proof of citizenship or immigration status needed. Everyone living in Vancouver can get a card.
Free Benefits You Didn't Know About
1. Streaming Movies & TV (Kanopy, Hoopla)
With your VPL card, you get free access to Kanopy (10 movie credits/month — art films, documentaries, classics) and Hoopla (10 borrows/month — movies, TV shows, audiobooks, comics). It's basically free Netflix with a different selection.
2. LinkedIn Learning (Full Access)
VPL gives you free access to LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com). That's thousands of professional courses — Excel, Python, data analysis, marketing, design — all free. This alone is worth $30/month if you paid for it yourself. Huge for newcomers building job skills.
3. Free Museum & Attraction Passes
VPL has Discover Passes you can borrow (like a book) for free admission to:
- Museum of Anthropology (UBC)
- Vancouver Art Gallery
- Science World
- HR MacMillan Space Centre
- Bloedel Conservatory
Each pass admits 2 adults + kids. Reserve online — they go fast. Check 2 weeks ahead for availability.
4. eBooks & Audiobooks (Libby App)
Download the Libby app, connect your VPL card, and borrow eBooks and audiobooks for free. Massive selection. Great for English practice — audiobooks help with listening skills.
5. Free Language Learning (Mango Languages)
VPL provides free access to Mango Languages — learn English or 70+ other languages. Good supplement to LINC classes.
6. Free Music Streaming (Hoopla)
Hoopla also has a music section. Not as big as Spotify, but free and legal.
7. Newspapers & Magazines (PressReader)
Free access to PressReader — thousands of newspapers and magazines from around the world in many languages. Great for staying connected to news from your home country.
8. 3D Printing & Maker Spaces
VPL Central Library has a free Inspiration Lab with 3D printers, laser cutters, recording studio equipment, and digital media tools. Free workshops teach you how to use them.

Other Library Systems in Metro Van
If you live outside Vancouver city limits, you'll use a different library system:
- Burnaby: Burnaby Public Library (bpl.bc.ca) — similar benefits
- Richmond: Richmond Public Library — excellent Mandarin/Chinese collection
- Surrey: Surrey Public Library — good multilingual resources
Each system has its own card, but they all offer free digital resources (Libby, Kanopy, LinkedIn Learning, etc.).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Vancouver library card in Burnaby?
Not for borrowing physical items. But most digital resources (Libby, Kanopy, LinkedIn Learning) work regardless of which library card you have. For physical books, get a card from your city's library system.
Do I need a permanent address to get a card?
You need a mailing address in Vancouver. A temporary address or shelter address works. If you're staying with a friend, their address is fine.
Is there a late fee for overdue books?
VPL eliminated late fees in 2022. Books auto-return digitally. Physical items will eventually be flagged on your account if very overdue, but no monetary penalties. Just return them when you can.
