I don’t know when home delivery meal services became a thing, but I am loving it. It seems like all the sudden, there are dozens of similar companies popping up, all competing for the same market share.
We have known many friends who have tried their hands at one of them. Although we have been intrigued in the past, none of the options really spoke to us. We felt we could find better ingredients on our own, and do the prep ourselves. I mean, how great could they really be?
Not only this but since we began eating Paleo, we struggled to find a service that offered specialty meals. Or offered organic produce, natural meats, and locally sourced ingredients. And meals that are chef inspired, thus items we want to cook. We knew if we were to invest in a meal delivery service, it would have to be a quality company.
Imagine our elation when we discovered Sun Basket recently. Not only do they offer Paleo meals, but their values are admirable.
If you aren’t familiar with the company, I want to provide a little background.

That’s it, super simple, right?
Based on all these benefits, we were eager to give it a try. Last month we made our selections from their weekly rotating menus, and a few days later, our first box arrived.
Our first impressions were very positive. The packaging is smart and environmentally friendly, we loved how everything was safely cooled and well organized, and the easy to follow recipe cards made executing the dishes stress-free.
We received two dinners, which were very generous portions, and a double breakfast for two. An overview of each dish follows.
Pan Seared Salmon with Orange-Jicama Salad
The Pan Seared Salmon with Orange-Jicama Salad was full of flavor, super fresh, had great texture, and even introduced us to a new spice we have come to consider a favorite.
The instructions were extremely clear, the dish was a cinch to prepare, and we had dinner on the table in about 30 minutes.
Lemongrass Steak Stir-fry with Bok Choy and Basil
This dish had a bit more chopping involved but was well worth it.
The homemade sauce was incredible and we loved all the veggies packed into this dish. It exploded with strong yet well-balanced flavor and was super satisfying. Definitely a dish we will make and request again.
Mango Parsley Smoothies and Skillet-Baked Eggs with Chard and Basil
Lastly, we sampled the double breakfast over the weekend. This included Mango Parsley Smoothies and Skillet-Baked Eggs with Chard and Basil. A seriously awesome weekend breakfast/brunch, let me tell you.
The smoothies were simple and straightforward, and seriously refreshing. We could picture sipping these on our deck in the upcoming warm months (please hurry Spring), and even adding protein powder for a stand alone breakfast. As with most smoothies, it was a great way to pack in some greens.
We enjoyed the smoothies while we prepped the second breakfast dish.
The Skillet-Baked Eggs is a serious winner. We are huge eggs fans, having them pretty much daily, and are always looking for new options. Especially on the weekends, we love baked eggs, whether it be omelets, casseroles, etc.
In fact, we loved this dish so much, we have enjoyed a variation of it several times since. The garlic greens, slight acid from the tomatoes, and creaminess of the egg all work wonderfully together.
